Lorem ipsum

Nothing new here, just never realised it actually stands for something..:

Cicero's original text:
…neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia non numquam eius modi tempora incidunt ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam quaerat voluptatem."

H. Rackham's 1914 translation:
Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. (more in the Wiki)

Those guys just took some random words and letters from our homeboy Cicero! Also check out this brilliant site for us webdesigners: http://html-ipsum.com

How to test your site from differenti countries?

I was wondering if there is such a tool? To test your site coming from different countries based on the IP address. We are currently working on a worldwide website (nice name) and have different settings based on the country. Because we know some people abroad we can test the site through them but it's not that friendly to ask them each and everytime when we want to test some functionality

Does anybody know such a tool??

a new kid in town

Hi, let me start by saying sorry that the blogposts on this website are, let's be honest not that frequent ;-) The reason for this is that as of 15 November 2007 i'm a fresh new dad of a baby boy named Tye (dutch language alert).

I will try to post a bit more in the coming weeks because we are growing really fast at our company and are busy with all sorts of interesting things... we actually made the choice to move all our database activity towards mySQL instead of MSSQL en some other changes are made that will insure the growth of our company.

For the people who still visit this site, please add it to your favorite feedreader and don't forget to fill in the new survey for the next major version of ColdFusion.

IMified

"IMified is an instant messenger buddy that works across all major IM networks and offers access to a growing number of web applications,  as well as productivity tools like notes, reminders, and todo's. Imified helps you get things done faster."

Great toll for those who want to improve productivity bij just using MSN or something like it. Also great for updating your Jaiku AND Twitter at the same time. Or, while you're at it, updating your Gmail Calender with a click. Or updating your blog, or.. or..

Just do it: imified.com.

Oh.. and did I mention that this is a ColdFusion application?? :-)

For everyone doing webdesign or webbuilding this one is a must read!! Print it out and give it to your design company or even better your clients before they are going to ask things from you that the website should have.

Finally a new design

After about 2 years I finally came around to make a new design for this site! Uhm actually my co-worker Michiel did the design.. I just implemented it.

It will need some improvement over the next couple of days but for starters it's looks pretty neat. Another reason why I created a new design is to let the new mobile phones browse my site using the latest cutting edge wifi technology. My old site wasn't ready for these phones.

The colorcoding will be fixed and there are some minor issues with div positioning etc... Let me know what you think! We will be posting a lot more on this blog about the things that keep us busy on the workfloor.

Specifying the Sitemap location in your robots.txt file

In November 2006 Google, Yahoo en Live said to embrace the sitemap protocol, also ask.com has made this promise now.

Today these searchengines announced that they made an extra "autodiscovery" feature for this protocol. With this feature you can now place the following text to your robots.txt that points to your XML sitemap location.

Sitemap: -- URL location to sitemap --

What is a sitemap?
A sitemap is a standarized method to point to all your pages on your site through a XML or text-based file (feed). For more info see the links below.

Setting the Last-Modified date on your blog

Based on the excellent article that Pete Freitag wrote about controlling the bandwidth on your RSS feed (see below) I decided to do the same with my homepage. The idea is simple, just place a Last-Modified date in your header with the last date in it. This could be the last date you posted something but in my case it's or the last post or the last reaction.

On the homepage I check if the last post date is newer than the last reaction date and based on that information I place a <cfheader> tag with that date in it.

<cfheader name="Last-Modified" value="#lastModifiedDate#" />

A browser or proxy will look at that date and will decide if it will show it's cached version (if it's still available) or that it will download the newer version.

PDA web coding... how to??

That's a nice title ain't!! But cut the crap and move on to the subject of the day.. and that is developing a website for a PDA.. I have 3 questions about this... and maybe you could help me out on those....

1. Yes or No.. image display on the PDA version of your website??

if Yes... are does images being resized on the pda itself or do you need some sort of PDA sized image for it instead??

if No... is a simple CSS line like below enought to stop the PDA from downloading the images??

 img {display: none;}

... or do I need to strip the complete <img /> tags out of my sourcecode?? Maybe some of you have experience in building PDA versions of websites and if so.. please help me out here!!

Mucho Gracias!!

K2 server on CFMX 7.0

The K2 server since cf7.0 is Verity version 5.5 and that's a big improvement... they say.. but I got about 100+ collections and not even big ones (around 2 to 5Mb) for different sites and my K2 service uses about 1Gig memory and about 2.5 Gigs virtual memory????

Also keep in mind that K2server is limited to 128 total
collections... that's "new" also... The solution is to create less collections, and collections that uses categories. The size of a collection is no longer limited to about a 100 documents, so that's better.. I think ;-)

My advice to you is... don't use Verity if you do not ABSOLUTELY need it!!

Verity K2

A very interesting article from Sean Tierney about K2 features and the performance of running it like a server. Read the article <a title="Read K2 article" href="http://www.scrollinondubs.com/?mode=entry&entry=3BEB8739-1143-CDC0-268453A217E8930F">here</a>

How to setup a default error template or 404 error template?

ColdFusion MX requires a relative path to your error-handling templates, whereas ColdFusion 5.0 and earlier accepted an absolute path, such as "C:\error\my404.cfm."

The solution is to create a mapping to your error templates. Then, specify this relative path in your missing Template Handler and Site-wide Error Handler fields.

For example:
Mappings:
Logical Path: /error
Directory Path: C:\error
Settings:
missing Template Handler: /error/my404.cfm
Site-wide Error Handler: /error/myError.cfm

As of CF version 6.0 (MX), when you submit these changes in CF Administrator, the "file does not exist" errors WILL APPEAR. This is a BUG. Ignore these warnings and test your templates manually. You'll likely find that they function perfectly.
